We really can’t say it is a team sport. Any sport that automatically invokes team play is classified as a team sport. A team sport is one where a person’s success or failure is dependent on one to many team players.

Take for example, a team game like basketball. It is next to impossible for a player to single-handedly navigate through all opponents towards the basket. He needs the help of many players. His team-mates understand his intentions and move accordingly. There is a lot of co-ordination and team work here.

But cricket is often a one-player event. In test cricket, a single bowler can be destructive. He can take all or most of the wickets in the match. A batsman can single-handedly turn the fortunes of a match with one single innings. In cricket, the whole team may rely on a particular player. The absence of the player on most times affects the outcome of the match.

It is seldom that cricket is played as a team. Some famous teams like Australia play cricket as a team sport. They rely less on individuals and more on the team. Their approach is based on plans, where each team member executes a plan. They have short term and long term plans during a match.

The Australian cricket team is probably the only team in world cricket that made cricket look like a team sport. There were no ”stars” in the team. Rather, the team played as a cohesive unit and made the team a star.

The current generation of children is fighting the largest ongoing battle against obesity in the history of mankind. Therefore, giving kids an excuse to exercise is reason enough to enroll them in the team sport of their choice. However, team sports provide many additional benefits besides burning calories.

First, team sports will keep the “my way or the highway” attitude at bay. When the child witnesses that all team members get to play, they may ditch the attitude and begin to consider the group as a whole. At the same time, they learn to be happy and supportive of other player’s accomplishments during the event and experience how it helps the team.

Second, team sports introduce the three “P’s”: practice, patience and persistence. Like the development of any other skill, kids must learn that the three “P’s” are critical to success. This includes showing up for practice, waiting their turn on the bench or sidelines and completing repetitive drills. The three “P’s” equate to important life lessons that can be developed through sports.

Third, a dedicated coach can have an incredible impact on the players. In many instances, the child will respond more positively to the coach than their own parents because they are an objective audience. Therefore, the child will continue to seek information and knowledge from the coach who is acting as a mentor.

Finally, team sports help to further develop family ties and camaraderie. Heading down to the local field for practice or playing catch in the yard can unite a family by allowing them to work together. Although the official reason is to practice, the result is time spent together.

If an athlete keeps training at the same intensity the body will adapt to be able to cope with that level of activity.
